Start your morning with this cozy, creamy apple cinnamon oatmeal made quickly on the stovetop. This easy oatmeal recipe combines sweet apples and warm spices for a comforting and nutritious breakfast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup rolled oats (old-fashioned oats)
  • 2 cups water or milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 1 medium apple, peeled, cored, and diced small
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or sweetener of choice (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional toppings: chopped pecans, extra cinnamon, Greek yogurt

Instructions

  1. Combine the diced apple, water or milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a small saucepan.
  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  3. Once boiling, stir in the rolled oats. Reduce the heat to low.
  4. Simmer for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring frequently, until the oats are creamy and the liquid is mostly absorbed. You control the thickness; add a splash more liquid if you prefer it thinner.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract and maple syrup, if using.
  6. Serve the warm spiced oats immediately. Top with your favorite additions like pecans or a dollop of Greek yogurt for extra protein.

Notes

  • For a thicker, creamier texture, use milk instead of water, or substitute half the liquid with Greek yogurt stirred in at the end.
  • If you want softer apples, sauté the diced apples in a teaspoon of butter or coconut oil for 3 minutes before adding the oats and liquid.
  • This recipe is easily doubled for more servings.
  • For a gluten-free breakfast, confirm your oats are certified gluten-free.
