Create a show-stopping Caramel Apple Trifle without turning on the oven. This recipe layers creamy cheesecake filling, spiced apples, and rich caramel for a perfect fall dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream, cold
  • 1 (3.4 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 1 cup cold milk
  • 3 medium apples (like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce, plus extra for drizzling
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) package pound cake or angel food cake, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 cup graham cracker crumbs (optional, for texture)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cheesecake layer: In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth. In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Gently fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the pudding layer: Whisk the instant vanilla pudding mix with the cold milk until thickened, about 2 minutes. Stir in half of the prepared cream cheese mixture until just combined.
  3. Prepare the apples: In a bowl, toss the diced apples with lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir in 1/2 cup of caramel sauce until the apples are coated.
  4. Assemble the trifle: Choose a large glass trifle bowl for best visual effect. Start with a layer of cake cubes covering the bottom.
  5. Create the first layer: Spoon half of the pudding/cream cheese mixture evenly over the cake. Top this with half of the spiced caramel apples.
  6. Add the next layer: Sprinkle half of the graham cracker crumbs (if using) over the apples. Add a light drizzle of extra caramel sauce.
  7. Repeat the layers: Add the remaining cake cubes, followed by the remaining pudding mixture, and then the rest of the spiced apples.
  8. Finish the trifle: Top the entire trifle with the remaining plain cream cheese mixture (or use extra whipped cream if preferred). Drizzle generously with additional caramel sauce before serving.
  9. Chill: Cover the trifle and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the layers to set and the flavors to meld.

Notes

  • For a truly show-stopping dessert, use a clear glass trifle bowl to display your distinct layers.
  • You can skip the graham cracker crumbs or substitute them with crushed shortbread cookies for a different crunch.
  • If you want a slightly softer cake layer, you can lightly brush the pound cake cubes with a tablespoon of apple cider before layering.
