Whip up this incredibly smooth, light, and fluffy homemade chocolate frosting in just 5 minutes. This easy chocolate buttercream frosting is perfect for cakes and cupcakes and uses simple ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk (or heavy cream for richer results)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Place the softened butter in a large mixing bowl. Beat the butter with an electric mixer until it is creamy and smooth.
  2. Add the cocoa powder to the bowl and mix on low speed until just combined with the butter. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
  3. Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed until incorporated.
  4. Pour in the milk and vanilla extract. Increase the mixer speed to medium-high and beat for 2 to 3 minutes until the frosting is light, fluffy, and smooth. Add the pinch of salt.
  5. If the frosting is too thick, add milk, one teaspoon at a time. If it is too thin, add powdered sugar, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency for spreading or piping on your cake or cupcakes.

Notes

  • For a richer chocolate flavor, use heavy cream instead of milk.
  • If you want a darker color, sift the cocoa powder before adding it to the butter.
  • This creamy chocolate frosting is best used immediately after mixing for the fluffiest texture.
