Make simple, naturally sweet homemade applesauce on the stovetop. This recipe is quick and perfect for a healthy snack or side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples (such as Gala or Fuji)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and chop the apples into 1-inch pieces.
  2. Place the chopped apples, water, cinnamon, and lemon juice (if using) into a large saucepan.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
  4. Reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the apples are very tender. Stir occasionally.
  5. Remove the pan from the heat. Mash the apples with a potato masher for a chunky texture, or use an immersion blender for a smoother consistency.
  6. Taste and add more cinnamon if desired. Serve warm or chill for later use.

Notes

  • For a smoother texture, cook the apples for an extra 5 minutes before blending.
  • Use naturally sweet apples like Fuji or Honeycrisp to avoid adding sugar.
  • This applesauce keeps well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
