Start your day right with this incredibly flavorful Eggnog French Toast Bake Casserole. It is a comforting, hearty breakfast that brings holiday cheer to any morning.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (about 1 pound) day-old brioche or challah bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups eggnog
  • 1/2 cup milk (any kind)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting
  • Maple syrup, for serving

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Arrange the bread cubes evenly in the prepared dish.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, eggnog, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt until well combined. This is the custard base.
  3. Pour the eggnog custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes. Gently press the bread down to soak up the liquid.
  4. Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight. This step lets the bread fully absorb the flavor.
  5. When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. If using, sprinkle the chopped nuts over the top of the casserole.
  7. Bake uncovered for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed, golden brown, and the center is set (no liquid remains when lightly touched).
  8. Let the bake rest for 10 minutes before serving. Dust generously with powdered sugar and serve warm with maple syrup.

Notes

  • Using day-old bread gives you the best texture for soaking up the custard.
  • You can substitute regular milk for half the eggnog if you prefer a lighter custard, but the flavor will change slightly.
  • For extra richness, add a splash of rum or brandy to the custard mixture (optional).
  • This dish is excellent made ahead of time, making your morning simple.
