Celebrate the holidays with this delightful Eggnog French Toast Bake. It’s a warm, comforting, and festive breakfast or brunch dish that perfectly captures the spirit of Christmas. This bake is easy to prepare and will fill your home with a wonderful aroma.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (1 pound) challah or brioche bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 3 cups eggnog
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
  • Maple syrup for serving

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Arrange the bread cubes in the prepared baking dish in an even layer.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, eggnog, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, salt, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Pour the eggnog mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are moistened. Gently press down on the bread if needed to help it soak up the liquid.
  5. Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the bread mixture.
  6. Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the bread to fully soak up the eggnog mixture.
  7. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Remove the plastic wrap and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the French toast bake is golden brown and set in the center. A knife inserted near the center should come out clean.
  9. Let the bake cool slightly before serving.
  10. Dust with powdered sugar, if desired, and serve warm with maple syrup.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use a good quality eggnog.
  • If you don’t have challah or brioche, French bread or Italian bread can be used.
  • Ensure the bread is stale or slightly dried out for best results; fresh bread can become too soggy.
  • For individual servings, you can bake this in muffin tins. Adjust baking time accordingly.
