Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (about 1 pound) stale bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups eggnog
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg, plus extra for topping
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (for greasing)

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
  2. Arrange the bread cubes evenly in the prepared dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, eggnog, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the eggnog mixture slowly and evenly over the bread cubes, making sure all the bread absorbs the liquid.
  5. Press the bread down gently to submerge it.
  6. Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
  7. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Uncover the baking dish and sprinkle the top lightly with extra ground nutmeg.
  9. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the French toast bake is puffed, set in the center, and golden brown.
  10. Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.
  11. Serve warm with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • Using slightly stale bread helps the custard absorb better without becoming too soggy.
  • For a richer flavor, use high-quality eggnog.
  • You can prepare the entire dish the day before to save time on Christmas morning.
  • Serve with a dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle of maple syrup.
