Treat yourself to a truly indulgent Fig Walnut Baklava, layered with rich nuts and sweet figs, all drenched in fragrant honey syrup. This recipe balances deep, comforting flavors with a touch of brightness.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound phyllo dough, thawed
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups walnuts, coarsely chopped
  • 1 cup dried figs, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1 strip lemon zest
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Butter a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. Mix the chopped walnuts, chopped figs, cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom in a bowl. This is your nutty, fruity heart.
  3. Lay one sheet of phyllo dough in the prepared pan. Brush lightly with melted butter. Repeat this process until you have 8 buttered layers.
  4. Spread half of the fig and walnut mixture evenly over the buttered phyllo layers.
  5. Top with 4 more buttered phyllo sheets, brushing each one.
  6. Spread the remaining fig and walnut mixture over these layers.
  7. Top with the remaining phyllo sheets, buttering each layer. Make sure the top layer is well-buttered.
  8. Using a sharp knife, score the baklava into diamond shapes before baking. Do not cut all the way through.
  9. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crisp.
  10. While the baklava bakes, make the syrup. Combine sugar, water, honey, and lemon zest in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the lemon juice. Let the syrup cool slightly.
  11. Immediately pour the warm syrup evenly over the hot, baked baklava. You should hear a satisfying sizzle.
  12. Let the baklava cool completely, absorbing all that sweet liquid, for at least 4 hours or overnight. Cut along the score lines before serving.

Notes

  • Keep your phyllo dough covered with a damp towel while you work to prevent it from drying out.
  • For the best flavor, use high-quality honey.
  • Cutting the baklava before baking helps the syrup penetrate deeply.
