Create rich and creamy garlic mashed potatoes with butter. This recipe balances deep, comforting flavor with a fresh touch, perfect for elevating any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds Russet potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 4 cloves garlic, peeled
  • 1 teaspoon salt, plus more for boiling water
  • 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Place potatoes and whole garlic cloves in a large pot. Cover with cold water by about one inch. Add 1 teaspoon of salt to the water.
  2. Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to maintain a steady simmer. Cook until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 15 to 20 minutes.
  3. Drain the potatoes and garlic well. Return them to the hot, empty pot. Let them sit for one minute to allow excess moisture to evaporate.
  4. Mash the potatoes and garlic together using a potato masher or ricer until mostly smooth. Work quickly.
  5. Add the warmed milk and softened butter to the mashed potatoes. Stir gently until just combined and creamy. Do not overmix.
  6. Season with salt and black pepper to your taste. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, roast the garlic before mashing instead of boiling it with the potatoes.
  • Warm the milk slightly so it incorporates better without cooling down your potatoes.
  • Use a potato ricer for the fluffiest texture.
  • Taste and adjust the seasoning before serving.
