  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups thinly sliced peeled apples (about 4 medium)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce, plus more for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  6. Press about two-thirds of the dough evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan.
  7. In a medium bowl, toss the sliced apples with 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  8. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the dough in the pan.
  9. Drizzle 1/2 cup of caramel sauce over the apples.
  10. Crumble the remaining one-third of the dough over the caramel layer.
  11. Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbly.
  12. Let the bars cool completely in the pan before cutting. Drizzle with additional caramel sauce before serving, if desired.

Notes

  • Using a mix of apple varieties like Honeycrisp and Granny Smith will give you a nice balance of sweet and tart flavors.
  • Ensure your butter is softened but not melted for the best bar texture.
  • Cooling completely is key for clean cuts.
