Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast in warm milk with a pinch of sugar; let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the activated yeast mixture, remaining sugar, egg, melted butter, flour, and salt. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled.
  5. While the dough rises, prepare the filling: In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar, maple syrup, and vanilla extract.
  6. Roll the risen dough into a large rectangle, about 12×18 inches.
  7. Spread the maple syrup mixture evenly over the dough. Sprinkle with chopped pecans.
  8. Roll the dough tightly along the long edge to form a log. Cut the log into 12 equal rolls.
  9. Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan. Pour any remaining filling mixture into the bottom of the pan.
  10. Arrange the rolls cut-side up in the prepared pan. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  11. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  12. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown.
  13. While the buns cool slightly, mix the powdered sugar and milk to create a thin glaze.
  14. Drizzle the glaze over the warm buns immediately after removing them from the oven. Serve warm.

Notes

  • When measuring flour, use the spoon-and-level method to avoid dense buns.
  • Ensure your milk is warm, not hot, to protect the yeast.
  • For an extra layer of flavor, use dark amber maple syrup.
  • This recipe benefits from a little patience during the kneading process.
