Enjoy a warm, festive Mulled Wine with the bright flavors of orange and the subtle spice of star anise. This recipe honors tradition while offering a comforting holiday drink.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (750ml) bottle dry red wine
  • 1/4 cup brandy (optional)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 2 whole star anise
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 strips orange zest

Instructions

  1. Pour the red wine and brandy (if using) into a large saucepan.
  2. Add the sugar, orange slices, star anise, cloves, cinnamon stick, and orange zest to the wine.
  3. Heat the mixture over medium-low heat. Do not let it boil.
  4. Stir occasionally until the sugar dissolves and the wine is hot, about 15-20 minutes. This allows the spices to infuse.
  5. Taste the wine and add more sugar if you prefer it sweeter.
  6. Remove the saucepan from the heat.
  7. Carefully strain the mulled wine into mugs, discarding the solids.
  8. Serve immediately and enjoy the warmth.

Notes

  • For a non-alcoholic version, substitute the wine with dark grape juice or cranberry juice.
  • You can substitute the brandy with a dark rum for a different depth of flavor.
  • If you prefer strong spice notes, gently warm the whole spices in a dry pan for one minute before adding them to the wine.
