Ingredients
Scale
1 pound ground beef
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 large egg
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 cup unsalted butter
4 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Salt and pepper to taste
4 sub rolls
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, 2 minced garlic cloves, milk, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
Roll the mixture into 1-inch meatballs.
Heat olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides. Remove meatballs from skillet and set aside.
Add butter to the same skillet. Once melted, add the remaining 4 minced garlic cloves and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
Gradually whisk in the beef broth until smooth. Bring to a simmer, then stir in the heavy cream, parsley, and red pepper flakes (if using).
Return the meatballs to the skillet. Season the sauce with salt and pepper to taste.
Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and the sauce has thickened.
While the meatballs are baking, split the sub rolls and lightly toast them if desired.
Once baked, spoon the saucy meatballs and sauce into the sub rolls. Top with shredded mozzarella cheese.
Place the filled subs back in the oven for a few minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Notes
You can use a mix of ground beef and pork for richer flavor.
For extra cheesy goodness, add a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese along with the mozzarella.
