A recipe for traditional Southern coleslaw featuring a thick, sweet, and tangy mayonnaise-based dressing.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups shredded cabbage (green and purple mix)
  • 1 cup shredded carrot
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon celery seed
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Place the shredded cabbage and carrots in a large bowl.
  2. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, buttermilk, apple cider vinegar, sugar, celery seed, salt, and pepper until smooth. This is your dressing.
  3. Pour the dressing over the cabbage and carrot mixture.
  4. Toss everything together until the vegetables are evenly coated with the creamy dressing.
  5. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving. This allows the flavors to meld and the cabbage to soften slightly.
  6. Stir well before serving.

Notes

  • For a thicker dressing, reduce the buttermilk slightly or use a full-fat mayonnaise.
  • You can shred the vegetables yourself or buy pre-shredded coleslaw mix.
  • This slaw tastes best when made at least 4 hours ahead or the day before serving.
  • Serve this coleslaw alongside barbecue or fried chicken.
