This recipe provides instructions for a classic, layered Southern banana pudding using Nilla Wafers for distinct texture between creamy pudding layers.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (5 ounce) box instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 2 cups cold milk
  • 1 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
  • 4 large ripe bananas, sliced
  • 1 (12 ounce) box Nilla Wafers

Instructions

  1. Prepare the instant vanilla pudding according to package directions, using 2 cups of cold milk. Whisk until the mixture begins to thicken.
  2. Gently fold the thawed whipped topping into the thickened pudding until just combined. Do not overmix.
  3. Select a clear glass serving dish (9×13 inch or similar size) to show the layers.
  4. Arrange a single layer of Nilla Wafers across the bottom of the dish.
  5. Place half of the sliced bananas evenly over the wafer layer.
  6. Spoon half of the pudding mixture over the bananas, spreading it gently to cover completely.
  7. Add a second layer of Nilla Wafers over the pudding.
  8. Arrange the remaining banana slices over this wafer layer.
  9. Top with the remaining pudding mixture, spreading it to cover the bananas.
  10. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap.
  11. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, before serving. This allows the wafers to soften slightly while maintaining structure.

Notes

  • For the best texture, assemble the pudding the day before you plan to serve it.
  • Use slightly underripe bananas if you prefer firmer slices in the final product.
  • If you want a meringue topping instead of whipped topping, prepare a separate meringue and bake it briefly on top before chilling.
