Ingredients
Scale
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 3/4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup brewed strong black tea, cooled
1 cup powdered sugar (for frosting)
1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for frosting)
1 tablespoon milk or cream (for frosting)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a muffin tin with paper liners.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and cloves.
In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk and cooled tea. Mix until just combined; do not overmix.
Fill the cupcake liners about two-thirds full.
Bake for 18 to 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cupcakes cool completely on a wire rack.
To make the frosting, beat the powdered sugar, softened butter, and cinnamon together until smooth. Add milk or cream one teaspoon at a time until you reach a spreadable consistency.
Frost the cooled cupcakes generously.
Notes
Use high-quality tea for the best chai flavor.
The tea must be completely cool before adding it to the batter.
For an extra spice kick, lightly dust the finished frosting with a pinch of cardamom.
