Make restaurant-style Ahi Tuna Tartare at home in under 20 minutes. This recipe balances fresh, sushi-grade tuna with a creamy avocado base and a light, zesty dressing, perfect for an impressive appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb sushi-grade Ahi Tuna steak, finely diced
  • 1 ripe avocado, mashed for cream
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice (plus extra for avocado)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon low-sodium soy sauce or tamari
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 small shallot, minced
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives
  • 1/4 teaspoon sriracha or chili garlic sauce (adjust for spice)
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • Wonton chips or cucumber slices, for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the avocado cream: In a small bowl, combine the mashed avocado with 1 teaspoon of lime juice, a pinch of salt, and a pinch of pepper. Mix until smooth. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the tuna: In a separate medium bowl, combine the finely diced Ahi Tuna, 1 tablespoon of lime juice, sesame oil, soy sauce, grated ginger, minced shallot, chives, and sriracha. Gently fold the ingredients together until just combined. Do not overmix.
  3. Taste the tuna mixture and adjust seasoning if needed.
  4. To serve, place a ring mold on each serving plate. Spoon a layer of the avocado cream into the bottom of the mold, pressing lightly.
  5. Top the avocado layer with the seasoned tuna mixture, pressing gently to shape.
  6. Carefully remove the ring mold.
  7. Serve immediately with crispy wonton chips or fresh cucumber slices for scooping.

Notes

  • Use only the freshest, sushi-grade tuna available for this raw preparation.
  • For a presentation similar to Gordon Ramsay’s style, you can layer the ingredients in a tall glass or use a small round cookie cutter for shaping.
  • If you prefer a milder flavor, omit the sriracha and use only a few drops of citrus juice in the tuna mix.
  • This dish is a fantastic, healthy raw fish dish perfect for light summer dinner ideas.
