About Us: A Tale of a Spoon and a Sprout
Welcome. We’re Jun and Mei, and this is our kitchen.
For over 45 years, we’ve been having a delicious conversation. He doesn’t always use words, and I don’t always use a recipe, but we are always talking.
He calls me Sprout. I call him Spoon.
I am Spoon. I believe that food is memory. A dish should have roots, a story that goes deep into the earth. I am the keeper of our family’s culinary heritage , the slow-simmered broths, the perfectly browned meats, the comforting rice dishes that have nourished our family for generations. My joy comes from the weight of a heavy pot and the scent of something that has been cooking for hours. I find comfort in the familiar, the soulful, the timeless. I am the anchor.
And I am Sprout. I believe that food is life, and life is always reaching for the sun. I am the one with dirt under my fingernails from our little balcony garden. My joy comes from a freshly picked herb, a vegetable at the peak of its season, a new flavor combination that just might work. I love taking Spoon’s beautiful, deep-rooted recipes and helping them grow in a new direction , a little brighter, a little fresher, a little lighter. I am the wings.
For decades, this was just our private language. Our kitchen was the place where the Spoon met the Sprout.
Our children and grandchildren would always ask, “How do you make your food taste like this?”
We realized we could never just write down a recipe. Because the recipe wasn’t just a list of ingredients. It was the story of the Spoon and the Sprout. It was the balance between the deep, comforting roots and the fresh, vibrant leaves.
That is why we created Spoon & Sprout.
